BMW Z3 Coupé

Tuesday June 06, 2023

Recently, BMW celebrated the 25th anniversary of the BMW Z3 Coupe. An excellent opportunity to reflect on these two extraordinary cars.

Internally, a desire arose at BMW to bring a sporty coupe, shooting brake-like car to market. Given the Z1 going out of production and a study model that may have been the first impetus, the Z3 Coupe appears later in the 1990s. Parts from the E36 and even still from the E30 were the basis of the BMW Z3 Roadster, and on this basis the Coupe later found its way to the production line. At the time, it was already speculated that the car would become an instant classic. Now that is more often said and in fact we can only confirm it after about twenty-five years. Considering that less than 7% of the Z3s produced are Coupes, the design is still acclaimed, and the average selling prices are a lot higher than those of the Z3 Roadster, any doubts about this speculation have probably been dispelled!

The range started in 1998 with the 2.8 with 193hp and the Z3 M, later the 2.8 was replaced by the 3.0 six-in-line with 231hp. At the time, the 2.8 started at a sloppy 100,000 guilders, huge money at the time. Prices are now a lot friendlier and Automotive Auctions expects them to stabilize more and more in the coming period.

Automotive Auctions is offering a 2.8 from 1999 and a 3.0 from 2001, a nice balance between the two model ranges of the Z3 Coupe.
The 2.8 came in BMW Arktissilber Metallic color and has an almost virgin odometer reading of less than 52,000km. Although we work with a read odometer reading in our auctions, the condition of the car underwrites the mileage. A nice option with this car is the sunroof, in addition, the interior is in clean condition. The top of the dashboard is not dried out or discolored and the seats nothing more than user marks. At most, the black interior headliner hanging in the back in little bit, the interior has stood the test of time well. In addition, paintwork looks good considering its age and likewise the engine compartment looks cared for. A sticker shows that the car has probably had further maintenance around 40-45,000km.

The 3.0 also has a low odometer reading: 67,000km. This car distinguishes itself from its 'older' counterpart above on a detail level, note for example the white indicators on the side and rear compared to the orange ones. This car rolled out of the factory in the color BMW Black Sapphire Metallic and also has an interior that has stood the test of time. Again, the car features a black interior headliner, which looks fine in our opinion. The rims may deserve some work, but the car otherwise looks good on the outside, as does the engine bay.
Both cars have been part of a private collection, have had very little use and therefore appear to be optically well preserved. We recommend maintenance for the
